It continues to exist today because the necessity still exists. Steer ’n Stein in Huntington Beach is no longer, but has branched out into locations throughout Southern California. Steer ‘n Stein was created without direction… some kind of dream… no recipes… and no money. Many, many years later we still have some kind of menu… no recipes… and lots of credit. A Legend In Its Own Time In 1982, the Southern California Restaurant Writers named The Trabuco Oaks Steak House “A Legend In Its Own Time.” It was an exhilarating honor, but also a humbling one. After all, being a legend in your own time is a pretty heavy responsibility. So we asked ourselves, what did we do to become a legend? On June 28, 1968 Eleanor, Duke and Randy Sherod opened Trabuco Oaks as a snack bar serving campers from O’Neill Regional Park and Trabuco Canyon residents. That worked out pretty well, so they decided to serve dinner as well. Now, there are dinners and there are DINNERS. We decided ours would follow two rules: keep it simple, and do it right. Our Story Roberto Vigilucci is passionate about food. He prides himself on unparalleled Italian home cooking reminiscent of his childhood in Milano, where families are raised in kitchens and food is a centerpiece of the culture. Upon visiting the U.S. in the mid-1980s, Roberto fell in love with San Diego and decided to call it home. Long sensing a need for classic Italian cuisine in San Diego, Roberto opened his first restaurant, Vigilucci’s Trattoria, in 1994 in downtown Encinitas.
